De Champlain was a cartographer who was given responsibility for exploring the coast in search of the best location for settlement. In 1604 he sailed to Acadia to establish a French colony. He was also required to act as negotiator in relations with the Aboriginal peoples. In 1608, he was sent to establish a settlement at Québec, where the fur trade with native peoples could be controlled more easily. De Champlain developed an immense trade network by forming partnerships with the Mi'kmaq.
