Ashoka was most famous for his religion conversion from Hinduism to Buddhism. He went to war with Kalinga in southern India after his grandfather gave him his empire of Mauryans. The battle resulted in over 100,000 Kalingan deaths, which horrified Ashoka. After that, he converted to Buddhism, called for religious toleration in his empire, and never went to war again. Ashoka ruled his people from 273 to 232 B.C. In this time, Ashoka's military won many battles, including the Kalingan battle, and added on to the amount of land and people of his empire.
