Bison was the main food source for the Metis. The bison hunt usually took place in the summer and early autumn. Most of the meat was dried to make pemmican while hides were tanned and made into buffalo robes. The bison hunt was an important event that involved the entire community. Metis women, men, and children were all a part of the bison hunt. Without bison, NWC traders and Metis would have starved and the fur trade would not have been as succesful as it was. The bison hunt was a central part of Metis life. It fostered a strong sense of community, pride, and discipline.
