The Allies wished to mislead the Germans by making them think their intended target was Pas de Calais but instead it was Normandy. On June 6th, 1944, the invasion began with 2000 bombers pounding the German defenses and Allied troops arriving on the beaches. Over 15, 000 Canadians landed at Juno Beach where they faced heavy gunfire but in the end secured it. The battle was fought on three fronts forcing the Germans to retreat but still put up fierce resistance. Signifies a huge loss for Germany, and the fact that the Allies could defeat the Axis Powers
