The Pemmican Proclamation was issued by Miles Macdonell in January 1814. It banned the sale and export of pemmican from the Red River Valley for one year. Miles Macdonell wanted the ban to protect the colonists from starvation but the Metis were greatly affected since they made a living from the pemmican trade. The NWC was just as irritated as the Metis because they needed pemmican to supply its fur traders. This proclamation led to the Battle of Seven Oaks which eventually led to the merger of the HBC and NWC in 1821. Fur trading was never the same.
