He lived from 1570 CE to 1635 CE so he only lived to be 65 years old. He was born into a mariner family which meant that he was good at navigation, map making, and drawing and writing reports. He sailed in 1598 to Cadiz, Spain and later the West Indies aboard his uncle’s ship the Saint Julien. On his journeys with his uncle he took notes and improved with his skills and later giving the notes to King Henry the fourth when Samuel returned. He studied the failed attempts at colonization and was later asked by King Henry the fourth to join a fur trading expedition.
